Scattered Showers Quilt in Transparency Watercolors

Today I'm sharing a sample of the Scattered Showers quilt pattern all sewn up in a lovely mix of blue, green, and purple blender fabrics.

I finished this one up last year and I have to admit that it's one of my favorite quilts that I've made in the last few years. I'm such a sucker for blues and greens!

The Scattered Showers quilt pattern pairs a sweet umbrella quilt block with a block that is a variation on a chain quilt block. I love how the chain blocks create a diagonal frame around each umbrella.

And before you start to panic about all of those squares in the chain blocks, let me assure you that they stitch up fast! The chain blocks use quick strip piecing techniques to help speed up construction. Strip piecing is one of my favorite quilting short cuts.

Scattered Showers Quilt Pattern

Like most of my quilt patterns, the Scattered Showers pattern includes multiple size options:
  • Baby 38.5" x 38.5"
  • Lap 38.5" x 50"
  • Throw 61.5" x 73"
  • Twin 84.5" x 96"
  • Queen 107.5" x 119"
This sample I'm sharing today is the throw size (61.5" x 73").

Scattered Showers is great for using Layer Cake squares (precut 10" squares). In fact, with just one pack of precut 10" squares you can make a twin sized quilt!

The pattern also has instructions for using fat quarters and yardage. For this throw sized quilt I used fat quarters. Technically I only needed 5 fat quarters for this quilt, but I wanted more variety so I added a few more prints into the mix.

Transparency Watercolors Fabrics

These fabrics are all from a line called Transparency Watercolors (by Modern Quilt Studio for Benartex). The full fabric line includes a lovely rainbow of colors, but for this quilt I stayed in the blue / green / purple family.

For the umbrella handles I used a navy blue solid fabric. That same fabric is also used as an accent in the chain blocks in the quilt, helping to tie everything together nicely.

I finished up this quilt on my Handi Quilter longarm. I used one of my favorite go-to computerized designs called Two Simple.

The Two Simple design looks good on pretty much EVERY quilt. It gives a quilt some great overall texture, without drawing too much attention away from the fabrics and those cute little umbrellas.
