Wishing Quilt Pattern

Introducing the Wishing quilt pattern - the newest pattern in the A Bright Corner pattern shop

Wishing is the perfect way to showcase your favorite quilting fabrics. And with just a handful of star blocks to make, this quilt sews up fairly quickly.

I stitched this one up in the new Mary Catherine fabric line by Amy Smart.

Great for your favorite prints

My original vision for this pattern was to take the concept behind the Star Trails pattern but swap out the thinner pieced rows with some nice wide rows that would be more suited to medium and large scale prints.

Sometimes it's hard to really love a fabric, but then have to cut it into smaller pieces. I designed the Wishing pattern to make the most use of those favorite prints.

Those long rows in the Wishing pattern are unpieced - meaning there are no vertical seams to break up the prints.

Another great thing about the Wishing quilt is that each size uses a limited number of fabrics. So it's a lot easier to select the fabrics for your quilt.

The twin size needs just 7 prints plus a coordinating fabric for the stars. It's a lot less overwhelming to choose just 8 fabrics than say like 15-20 fabrics in a typical twin size quilt.

For this quilt in the photos I chose the larger green floral print first and then selected the remaining prints. I wanted the stars to stand out a bit so I used a color that was different than the fabrics in the rows. Then I used that same navy blue print for the binding to help tie everything together.

Mary Catherine fabrics

For this cover sample of Wishing I used fabrics from the new Mary Catherine fabric line. It was designed by Amy Smart (Diary of a Quilter) for Riley Blake Designs.

The colors are soft and slightly muted and are just so lovely together. You can see more prints from the full Mary Catherine line here (as well as discover some of Amy's inspiration for the fabric line).

Wishing has four sizes

The Wishing pattern has four sizes:

  • Crib: 45" x 54"
  • Throw: 51" x 66"
  • Twin: 73" x 90"
  • Queen: 102" x 114"

I try to add as many size options into my patterns as I can. Sometimes I'm limited by the actual space available in the pattern booklet, and sometimes I'm limited by the design of the quilt. This pattern was a little trickier to add sizes because it's not just repeated blocks in rows and columns. But in the end I was able to make it work for a crib size all the way up to a queen size!

The quilt in these photos is the twin size and I used 7 different prints for the rows and one for the stars. The background fabric is a solid white (Moda Bella 98). I buy it by the bolt so I always have some on hand. It's my go-to white background fabric.

Longarm Quilting on the Wishing quilt

I was in a bit of a rush to get this one finished so for the quilting I chose a longarm panto that would stitch up quickly. This design is called Cakewalk and it's a really nice all-over loop design.

For the backing fabric I used a Riley Blake Confetti Cotton in the color "Songbird". The binding fabric is the same navy blue print that I used for the stars so it helps to tie everything together nicely.
