Introducing the Scattered Showers quilt pattern! Scattered Showers is a fresh, spring-inspired pattern that includes fun umbrella quilt blocks and chain blocks. It is precut friendly and includes plenty of size options for you to choose from.
The Scattered Showers quilt pattern is available in the A Bright Corner pattern shop.
I just have to say that I pretty much love any quilt that includes chain blocks (also sometimes referred to as Irish Chain blocks). So when I was sketching out the very first versions of these little umbrella quilt blocks, I knew right away that I wanted to pair them with chain quilt blocks.
Quick Piecing Techniques
Scattered Showers with Precut Fabrics
The Scattered Showers pattern can be made using precut 10" squares (Layer Cake squares), fat quarters, or yardage.
Using a Layer Cake is a pretty efficient way to make a Scattered Showers quilt. You can make a twin size quilt with just one Layer Cake! Or if throw size is more your style you can get two throw size quilts from a single pack of Layer Cake squares.
Did you notice how the prints are scattered around in the chain blocks? My first mock ups had the chain blocks all in gray but I felt that the gray overwhelmed the prints. By adding some print squares into the chain blocks it helped the prints to play a more visible role and the gray a supporting role.
Multiple Pattern Sizes
Scattered Showers includes diagrams and instructions for making five different sizes:
- Baby (or wall hanging): 38.5" x 38.5"
- Lap: 38.5" x 50"
- Throw: 61.5" x 73"
- Twin: 84.5" x 96"
- Queen: 107.5" x 119"
That smallest size is labelled as a baby size quilt, but it would also be super cute as a wall hanging!
The quilt in the photos I'm sharing today is the throw size and I made it using 5 FQ, all from different Lori Holt fabric lines.
Lori Holt Fabrics
When I was choosing fabrics for this cover sample of Scattered Showers I went to my local quilt shop for some inspiration. They had a large selection of Lori Holt fabrics, all displayed together on a group of shelves. I first chose that darker blue print and then started pulling other prints that worked well together.
That's one thing I love about Lori's fabrics - usually it's pretty easy (and foolproof) to mix and match different prints from her different fabric lines and you know they'll look good together.
Plus you can never go wrong with bright, primary colors, right?
For the background fabric I used Moda Bella 98. It's a nice, crisp white and I try to always keep some of it in my fabric stash. The backing fabric is an aqua colored coordinating solid that I found at the quilt shop - I didn't happen to write down the color sorry!
The binding fabric is the same darker blue print that I used in the quilt top. It's from the Vintage Happy 2 fabric line and this print is called Denim Daisy.
Longarm Quilting
When it was time to quilt this up I spent some time searching for the PERFECT design. I admit that I usually way overthink the quilting but when I saw this raindrop quilting design I knew I had to use it. The longarm panto is called Pouring Rain designed by Jessica Schick.
You can find the Scattered Showers quilt pattern in my shop. There are PDF downloadable and paper versions available.
