Top Notch Quilt Pattern

Today I get to share a new pattern with you! This is Top Notch - a quick to piece quilt pattern that uses precuts and includes four size options.

I've been working away stitching up several samples of this pattern and I can't wait to share them all with you. This bright and bold version is the one on the pattern cover.

Top Notch is a one-block quilt - there's minimal cutting and these blocks are super quick to stitch up.

Use Layer Cake squares, Fat Quarters, or Yardage

Top Notch was first dreamed up to be a great way to use my favorite Layer Cakes, and really...using precut 10" squares is the fastest way to make a Top Notch quilt. But you also have the option of using fat quarters or yardage (1/3 yard cuts).

Four different size options

The Top Notch pattern includes instructions and diagrams for four sizes of quilts:

Crib: 35" x 47.5"
Lap: 47.5" x 60.5"
Throw: 60.5" x 73"
Twin: 73" x 86"

To make this throw sized Top Notch I used 20 fat quarters from the fabric line Frankie (designed by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics).

Top Notch works really well with your favorite medium and large scale fabrics. You can see in the photo below that there's a good mix of blender prints, geometric prints, and large florals. And all of them look great in these blocks!

Try Different Contrasting Fabrics

For the Top Notch pattern you'll choose a contrasting fabric to go with your main prints. White is almost always my first choice for a secondary fabric but sometimes it's fun to try out other options!

You can see how this quilt would look with a black contrasting fabric swapped out for the solid white.

In the end I wanted to use some of the black prints from the fabric line in the blocks so I chose to use a solid white as the contrasting fabric.

I love the black prints mixed in with the reds, blues, greens, and yellows. You just can't go wrong with a color palette using primary colors, right?

For the back of this quilt I found a coordinating solid yellow fabric from my local quilt shop and the binding is a green print that isn't in the Frankie line, but it's a perfect match with the greens in the quilt. Sometimes you just use what you have!

The quilting is a longarm computerized design called Soho - it's one of my favorites because it pretty much looks good on every quilt and stitches out beautifully.

  2. I enjoy looking at quilt patterns to see if I can figure out how they are done. I have to admit, this one has me stumped. I really like it! I already receive your newsletter and am following your on Pinterest as Katie Q. I just went back and reread your post about your Fresh Fat Quarter Quilts book. The Lucky Star baby quilt pattern is definitely my favorite.
