Workshop in Progress - January 19

Last August was my month in one of my online quilting bees (Sew Bee It) and I chose to do Mondrian blocks.  It was fun to create my own block, and I love the blocks I've gotten back from the other members!  When I first had the idea, I thought I knew how I wanted the finished quilt to look.  Now I'm no so sure.  Every week or so I put all the blocks up, arrange them, rearrange them.... and then take them down.  I can't decide!

My original idea was to just join the blocks with the same 1 inch black sashing.  Now that the blocks are on the design wall I think they might need more breathing space between them.  What do you think?  Or do you have another idea??

  1. Hmmm, I could see doing the black sashing - would look very stained- glass-like. But I kind of like how they come together without sashing too, or maybe a thin white one that mimics how it looks on your wall, all that lovely white space in unexpected shapes.

  2. Oh what a great idea for bee blocks! I would probably try a white sashing before black. Maybe space them out a little on your design wall to see how some "breathing room" would look. You might also audition the orange for an unexpected shot of colour.

  3. Funny, my first thought was black sashing too, that is in keeping with Mondrian. But after looking at in with the white in between, I think I like that better. What a beautiful quilt that will be!

  4. I actually like how they look without sashing, but if you were to use it I think the black would be better as well.

  5. I think the black sashing would be too predictable. A thin white sashing would be a great option.

  6. I like the idea of some space between the blocks, and I like white better than black. What about a light grey sashing, though? I'm not great at visualizing, I'd have to actually see it, but would that provide the space between the blocks to highlight each one without being as heavy as black?

  7. I like them all scrunched together like this, but that's just me! You could consider setting them not in a grid, but with a couple grouped together with a border around them and play around with different combos.

  8. Wow, I LOVE those blocks. My first thought was of course to do black sashing. Trying to visualize white and I'm not sure. I agree with trying light grey, but I also love Felicity's idea of orange (probably because I LOVE orange!)

  9. What if you put black sashing between some of the blocks to break up some of the white space and add white space where there is black near the edges? Create a piece that looks like one whole instead of separating individual blocks. Looks like a fun project!

  10. I loke them all smushed up together as well but if you wanted to do a sashing I think I agree with the white idea

  11. My vote is no sashing. But once you have them all together place them in a quilt top as if they were one part of a larger Mondrian block. Add in some thin blacks lines and a few of the coloured pieces.

This will be cool regardless of how you finish it.
