Blossoms and Buds Quilt

I have a recent finish to share today, and a great new quilting book to tell you about!

This is my Blossoms and Buds quilt - made with a pattern from the new book, Quilt the Rainbow by Amber Johnson

Amber's book is filled with lots of scrap-friendly, quilty inspiration. She's included ten patterns, each showcasing a different color of the rainbow - and one lovely star quilt that includes all of the colors.

I've always been inspired by Amber's use of color, and her ability to combine fabrics from many lines and designers. It's so fun to see what she does with each color family.

And if you're a little less than confident at working with scraps, Amber includes a helpful section with tips for choosing and combining fabrics, and storing scraps.

I love the version of Blossoms and Buds from the book. I'm not usually a big fan of orange but the scrappiness just drew me right in.

For my version I used some Gingham Foundry fabrics. I've had this fat quarter bundle for awhile, just waiting to find the perfect pattern to go with it. I only needed a little of each FQ so I have plenty leftover for another project!

I added in the medium floral print, and for the largest squares in the quilt I used a Blossom Basics print in Navy. (Both Gingham Foundry and Blossom Basics are from Riley Blake Designs)

The original quilt finishes at 68" x 91", which is a great twin sized quilt. My version is slightly smaller - I just removed one row from the bottom of the quilt.

For the backing I used a Confetti Cotton Navy (Riley Blake Designs) and I got all fancy with piecing the backing. I cut up one of the extra fat quarters from the bundle and made a strip using that floral and the leftover Blossom Basic. Nothing too tricky, but I needed the backing to be just a little longer so I used what I had!

For the quilting I used a longarm design called Going Loopy. And I chose to use a navy thread - which at first I wasn't so sure about. I usually prefer my quilting to blend in but it was a tough choice with this particular quilt. If I used a white thread, then it would stand out on the navy fabrics. And if I used a navy thread it would stand out on the white and yellow fabrics.

In the end I went with the navy and it works!
