Windy City quilt in Shabby Basics

I don't know why, but I always forget just how FAST baby and crib sized quilts are to make! Back in December I started working on this crib size Windy City quilt and I have to say that the cool blues and greens were a refreshing change from all of the Christmassy reds and greens that I had been sewing with!

You know that one of my new favorite things is to use textured fabric for my background print - but I loved these colors so much I wanted to make them the star of the show in this Windy City quilt.

These are all prints from a line called Shabby. Shabby is a fun textured line of fabrics created by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs. There are 55 colors available* and even a handy color card that you can get to make it easier to find the perfect color of Shabby to go with your project.

The colors I used for this quilt are: Sweet Mint, Seaglass, Riley Aqua, Peacock, Leaf, Vivid, Azure, and Granite (for the gray star points).

Just as an FYI....my favorite Shabby to use for a background is Shabby Gray Cloud- it's a good white, with a bit of light gray texture to it but not so much that it's distracting from your main prints.

As I mentioned before, I was surprised at how quick this little crib quilt came together. The pattern is called Windy City and it's a great pattern for using

  • precut 2-1/2" strips (Jelly Rolls)
  • 10" squares (Layer Cakes) or
  • fat quarters
But for this version I used yardage - 1/4 yard cuts of 7 different colors of Shabby.

The pattern includes cutting instructions for all of the options listed above!

The Windy City pattern has instructions for four sizes:
Crib (44" x 55")
Throw (55" x 66")
Twin (77" x 88")
Queen (99" x 99")

These modern star blocks look more complex than they actually are - I promise! That's one thing I love about these star blocks. And with no sashing or borders it makes this an even quicker finish.

For the backing I used Blossom in Sweet Mint (from Riley Blake Designs). Sweet Mint is one of the colors of Shabby used on the front of the quilt so it was a great pairing.  The binding is the same Shabby Granite that is used for the star points.

  1. Thank you! I've been looking for a quilt to make to honour the birth of my newest great grand niece or nephew this summer. As the family lives on an island these colours will be perfect.
