Mod Mugs the Ombre Version

Today I'm sharing a version of the Mod Mugs quilt pattern. I used Ombre Flurries fabrics, and I love the frosty, wintery vibe of the finished quilt.

Mod Mugs is a fun and modern mug quilt that is traditionally pieced (no templates or paper piecing needed). The mugs are large enough to let some of the color variations of the ombre prints shine through.

You could also do some fussy cutting for each mug, or use your favorite medium or large scale prints. I shared a Christmas version of Mod Mugs here.

The pattern has a block variation that lets you add a whip cream topper unit to as many mugs as you'd like. I left the whip cream off this time, but you can see a version of Mod Mugs with the variation here

I love ombre fabrics but I'll be honest with you, I'm not always sure about how to use them best. They're so pretty on the bolt but then when I get them home I worry about how to cut them so that I don't lose the color variation from each print.

I've made three other quilts with ombre fabrics and I do feel that I'm getting a little more confident with each one.

These mug blocks are so fun in ombre fabrics though, don't you think?

The Mod Mugs quilt pattern includes four size options: wall hanging, lap, throw, and twin. This version is the throw size.

The pattern also gives you several fabric options to choose from. You can use layer cake squares (10" precut squares), fat eighths, fat quarters, or yardage.

For this quilt I used yardage (1/4 yard cuts) from a bundle that I bought from Modern Quilter. There is still some Ombre Flurries available here from Fat Quarter Shop.

For my background fabric I wanted some texture to it so I chose a Moda Grunge instead of a solid white.

A solid white would work just as well, but I just wanted to boost the "wintery" feel of this quilt and this Moda Grunge did the trick! The color is "Fog" and you can find it here. It's a favorite of mine and I've used it many times now.

For the border I used one of the green prints from the Ombre Flurries line and the backing fabric is a solid green that I picked up at my local quilt shop.

The quilting is a fairly new-to-me design called Parquet Pop. I chose it because I wanted to have an all-over texture, and I was looking for a design with an angle to it (as opposed to a very vertical or horizontal design) as well as some curves. Parquet Pop was perfect!
