My son’s quilt is the twin size which finishes at about 72” x 96".

Waaaayyy back in January 2011 I decided I really wanted to find a reason to use some of this fabric:

So I opened up Illustrator and came up with this idea:

I didn’t end up making that quilt (can’t remember why) but last month I was cleaning out some old files and photos and I found that image again. I realized it would be perfect for my son’s new quilt. This really is a quick pattern. I think it took me maybe three days to make this quilt from the first cut to the last binding stitch. (Translation: 2 hours each day during nap time, and 3 hours each night once the kiddos are in bed) Not bad eh?

I bound it in a slightly darker gray than what was used in the quilt. I believe the binding is Kona cotton in Charcoal and the fabric in the quilt is the Kona Medium Gray. I like how it frames the quilt just enough, but also blends in nicely with both the quilt front and back.
Here’s a view of the back (and my handsome helper). Instructions for creating this pieced backing are included in the pattern – for all three sizes.

My son is quite happy with his new quilt. Once we get his room all finished (we’re waiting for curtains and a cool artwork idea he had) I’ll get some photos up for you to see.
Oh and one really cool coincidence? When I showed my son the quilt he pointed out that the blocks sort of resemble his DS. Can you see it? How ‘bout if I rotate the blocks?

It made him love the quilt even more. I just pretended that I did that on purpose.
