Sew & Tell Friday

For one day this week I had to take a break from all of the red, black and green that I've been working with! I made myself one more shopping bag using the pattern found here:

Morsbags

It's a quick pattern and you can use just about anything - an old sheet, pillowcase, or in my case - fabric scraps!

The bottom of the bag is double layered just to add a bit more strength. I love that the pattern has you use french seams. It makes the inside nice and tidy - and of course stronger too!

Then, just on a whim, I used the leftover scraps, along with some netting to make a produce bag. It does the job, but it's not a perfect pattern yet. I'm still tweaking it.

So, what have you finished this week? Visit Amylouwho and join in!

I Dream in Red, Green & Black

Lately I've been working on my string block quilt in the evenings after the kiddos are asleep. I'll work right up until my bedtime (and sometimes past it!) So it's no surprise that I end up dreaming about quilting, quilting and more quilting. Last night I woke myself up because my dreams were driving me crazy.

So far I have 83 blocks done though...

and only about 30 more to go! These are the paper squares with the red center stripe all glued and ready to go. I keep this stack on my sewing table...

...and my bin of strips underneath my ironing board. So even if I just have 10 minutes I can sit and get at least one block done.

Just for fun, I brought some of my completed blocks upstairs and played around with the layout. Here are some variations you can do with a simple string block:

(When pieced together in a quilt top, these would end up being the same - it's just a different way to piece the blocks together)

Diagonal Stripes

A Chevron Pattern

Vertical Stripes (I would trim the edges off)

In the end, I prefer this:

Although, with different fabric choices, some of the options above would be very cool. Here's a link to the string block tutorial that I used.

A Proud New Member

I'm so glad someone (other than me) finally started one of these. It's a little father away than I was hoping, but maybe through this group I'll be able to find some kindred spirits that live down my way. Join up, everyone!

Progress

Slow progress is better than no progress, right? My string block picnic quilt is finally coming along. Right now it's about 60x60, but I just decided to add another couple of rows. So I'm back to the block-creation step.

I think I'm about ready to work on something other than red, green & black.
