It's been awhile since I've made a new mini quilt for myself but now I have a new one to enjoy!
The pattern for this little mini quilt is found in the new book by Bev McCullough called Make It Mini. The book has 13 patterns and each one includes a bit of embroidery as a part of the project.
And I have a copy of the book to give away today! (details at the end of the post)

I love her bright and cheery version, but since we're heading toward the fall season I wanted to make something I could use for the next several months.
So I chose a variety of scraps that were leftover from another fall-inspired project. I found the text print first (used in the center of each flower) and let the colors in that print help me choose which colors of scraps to use. (The text print is from the Cozy Up fabric line by Corey Yoder)
Honestly, what drew me to this project first was the fact that it uses english paper piecing to make the hexie flowers. It was fun to pair a technique that I'm familiar with (EPP) with one that I'm less familiar with...embroidery.
If you've never tried EPP (english paper piecing) this small project would be a great way to try it out!
Bev includes the template for the hexagon shape to make these hexie flowers - I photocopied it and then cut my own from card stock paper. Then she walks you through every step of the project, from glue basting to stitching the shapes together, and then the embroidery stitches.
For the embroidery portion of the project she has a tip box that suggests you can use the embroidery stitches as part of the quilting so that's what I did - and I love it! For the embroidery / quilting I used Aurifil Floss, color 2845.
You can find copies of Make It Mini here on Amazon, and signed copies from Bev's shop here. Bev also makes the cutest needle minders - I have several and I love them!
Want to see a few of the other projects from the book? These were some that caught my eye!
Right now Bev is hosting a book tour and if you follow along you'll get to see more of the projects in the book. It's always fun to see what everyone makes!

I did try EPP once to make a small bag. I do love hand embroidery, so this would be a great project to combine two loves.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t tried EPP. . . yet. It’s on the list though! Smithcindyk@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have done a little EPP and I love to embroider while watching TV. Looks like a great book.
ReplyDeleteI learned to EPP up at Chautauqua NY in a class and had such a great time!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I can do paper piecing. Not a champion but do enjoy working this method.
ReplyDeleteI have not tried EPP but would like to in the future
ReplyDeleteI have never tried EPP but I love the idea of the mini quilts. I would definitely like to try EPP in the future.
ReplyDeleteI made a block with EPP in the Old School Block of the Month. I enjoyed it and love the result, but wouldn't want to make an entire quilt that way. Love your mini!
ReplyDeleteI made a block with EPP in the Old School Block of the Month. I enjoyed it and love the result, but wouldn't want to make an entire quilt that way. Love your mini!
ReplyDeleteI have done a little paper piecing but not English paper piecing. I have almost started a project a few times to try it. I need to just do it. The results are always so stunning. I love your mini!
ReplyDeleteI've tried EPP. But I have not yet finished a project with it!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Bev is the best!
ReplyDeleteI have not tried EPP, I've been afraid to. I think it's time I try.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE your version of 'Hexie Flowers". I have done English paper piecing and a small project is just 'up my alley' PLUS love the embroidery/quilted lines. This pattern speaks to me ....I definitely want to do it in spring colors for me. Karen Gay is my name and I have the fabrics ready with your pattern for making the Star Trails pattern. Life has been getting in the way of my progress!
ReplyDeletePS to #14 comment just posted. My email address is: karengary7159@sbcglobal.net.
ReplyDeleteI have not tried EPP though have several templates (small and larger) thinking I would try it. I am fine until I remember that there is so much hand stitching to this and my hand stitching looks like a 4 year old attempted it…..I am left-handed and cannot seem to get a comfortable feel for it and my stitches are all over the place and wonky. I have considered making the little hexies and then machine stitching them using a zigzag stitch. I may still try it. This might be a good smaller pattern to try first to see how that goes. Yours turned out darling! Thanks for sharing your project from Bev’s new book. (Kathy Clayton kclayton77@me.com)
ReplyDeleteI was just gifted some supplies to start doing EPP! Excited! Love your project! butler83ataoldotcom
ReplyDeleteI have not tried EPP but i am ready to try it! This project will be the one to help me do it! Lin. linandgail@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI like to do EPP. Would like to make this project and love your color choices.
ReplyDeleteThe embroidery on this quilt is the cherry on top! I have not tried EPP but I want to!

I have a couple of EPP projects going. They're larger projects so it is taking longer to complete. The book looks good.
ReplyDeleteThis is so adorable!!! 🥰
ReplyDeleteHi, I haven't tried English Paper Piecing yet but I do have a few patterns to try, I just need the time, smiles. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteEPP is so much fun!!
ReplyDeleteI love English paper piecing so far. I’m making a Grandmas Garden with heroes. I’d love to win that book. I just came off 8weeks of two broken bones in my left hand. I’m not sure, but I hope that I can get back to hand piecing.
ReplyDeleteThat’s hexies not hero’s. OMG.
DeleteI have made hexi flowers using hand piecing but I’ve never used the EPP technique. This is a beautiful project!
ReplyDeletevp4jp@me.com
I have never tried EPP. I'm very unsure of myself so I haven't been brave enough to try EPP yet. I believe that I will be giving it a shot with the help of this book!!
ReplyDeleteI’ve made a full sized bed quilt with epp. The Henie’s were quite large so I feel like I cheated 😉. I’m currently working on another epp project and loving it. Ncmatheson0@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI made a needle book for my daughter she loved it. Debbie rhodes Drhodes9@cox.net
ReplyDeleteI haven’t tried paper piecing yet but it’s on my list! Now maybe I’ll have a reason

I have tried EPP. I liked it especially as a small travel project,
ReplyDeleteI have basted hexies but do not have a completed project under my belt. I have even participated in a Halloween Hexie swap so I have over 80 Halloween Hexies to put into a fun project. I was planing on a table runner or wall hanging. Would love to try one of these really pretty projects in the book. EPP would be a great relaxing hobby and I should have something on hand in my purse at all times to work on. Thanks for all of the outstanding inspiration. 🧵✂️💕

I would love to try English paper piecing. I love this pattern and hexagons
ReplyDeleteI have done a little paper piecing. I love the hexagon quilt
ReplyDeleteSuzanne here! suzanneeuher@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have done EPP and have completed about 50 hexi daisies but am saving for a quilt! This book is great and the fruit mini is adorable! Thanks!
A few years ago there was a quilt-a-long I think it was called the Kingfisher quilt. It was made with paper pieced hexagons. I participated and actually finished it. Since then I’ve made some more hexagons but not put together into anything. Making the Kingfisher quilt was a really enjoyable experience and also one of the only quilt-a-longs I’ve completed.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to include my email tpott@optonline.net. Sorry I don’t know why I came up as anonymous.
DeleteThis book has a great variety of quilt blocks & techniques. Hexies are a favorite and everything goes with embroidery !
ReplyDeleteI have never tried EPP so I like the idea of trying it on a small quilt. The quilting by embroidery is something I can do too.
ReplyDeletemelodyn10@yahoo.com
I'd love this book as most of my projects are on the smaller scale! Yes. I have tried EPP and enjoyed it, but not as much as regular machine stitching. Duchick at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI tried EPP and it was hard! At a class the instructor took my star home to finish it! I will learn because I love this pattern! I am currently working in a red work embroidered quilt.
ReplyDeleteI have an EPP in progress, it's easy to pick up and put down. I think I was too ambitious though as I have no plan for how to put the hexies together into a quilt! It may be a mini!
ReplyDeleteI made a blue epp hexagon flower quilt, one of my favourites!!
ReplyDeleteI love EPP. It's a great project for the car, doctor's office, etc. I can't wait to see the book up close. Jmikebalou (at) aol (dot) com
ReplyDeleteI love EPP and have made several quilts using EPP. fkmsc@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI took a quilt class in 2015 where we used EPP to make cute Hawaiian shirts - I lived in Hawaii at the time. I haven't done it since then, but these hexies are so cute I'm definitely tempted to give it another go!
ReplyDeleteA number of years ago, I visited a quilt guild meeting and lady sitting next to me was hand stitching fabric onto hexie paper shapes. She handed me fabric, shape and needle to try so I stitched hexies with her during the entire meeting. It was relaxing and very fun! I love your table topper.
ReplyDeleteLast year I did a BOM called "Old School". Each block was from a different designer and covered a older way of making the block. I have one block left to do that uses EPP. I really need to learn how to do it. Love your version using EPP. mjcloke@att.net
ReplyDeleteI've not ever, yet, tried EPP but I hope to one day. I have a couple of really small ones I could try.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I have never completed a EPP project. They are all still in the flower stages, but nothing completed! This is a great idea though for completing things in a timely manner!
ReplyDeleteI love EPP ... I do a fair amount of it. The look of this piece really appeals to me! I love the outline stitched hexies!! :)
ReplyDeleteLove this mini quilt - fresh yet vintage!
ReplyDeleteI have tried EPP before and I enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t tried EPP, but do enjoy traditional methods of sewing! Anita at quiltlovefordomesticfelicity@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have tried EPP many years ago. Looks like it's time to try it again with the cute quilt you chose from the book.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been wanting to try EPP and this looks like a great project. Looking forward to seeing more of the book.
ReplyDeleteI have tried EPP and liked the handwork feel of it. I do embroidery, too, so several of the patterns in the book really appeal to me. Your sample piece is so pretty with the colorway your chose.
ReplyDeleteYour posting came at a perfect time. Just recently joined a senior group who lost their sewing teacher (she passed away) and when they saw my project they asked me to be their teacher. I was working on hexies, just like yours. They were sure they wouldn't be able to do it, but I came the next week with kits for each of them, needles, thread, many fabrics cut up already and taught them. Even the ladies who were sure it was 'too hard' worked away at their projects (even the 96 year old) and were VERY proud of their work when done. They were given 'blank' pot holders I'd made to attach their flower creations to. Now we are on to tote bags (thank the Lord I have 48 years of fabric to pull from at home). Now they are SO excited at how their bags turned out, so now making a bunch of them for gifts. Me? I'm still working on my hexies as I also attach mine to low volume blocks for quilts - which the church doesn't know yet, but will be donated to hopefully be raffled or sold. Fingers crossed - I need that book for more ideas! Deb E mdenders@msn.com
ReplyDeleteI think that's wonderful that you've taught others! And on top of that, you're making a quilt that will be raffled or sold for a great cause!
DeleteI have not tried EPP yet but would like to. ddjhperry@rogers.com
ReplyDeleteI only tried EPP for a online 12 block sew along back in 2012. I have never naje a quilt. This mini quilt would be a good project to try EPP.
ReplyDeleteI just entered my comment. It came up as #64 as anonymous (like many other comments.) "I only tried EPP for an online 12 block sew along back in 2012. I have never completed a quilt. This mini Quilt would be a good project to try EPP.
ReplyDeleteI've made several EPP hexies, but have never completed a project. This would be a good pattern to try to complete a project.
ReplyDeleteI just started back doing EPP. I’ve never been properly trained to do EPP but I’m leaning a lot by watching utube videos and by trial and error!!! I love Bev’s new book and I really love your hexie mini quilt!!! Very pretty!!!
ReplyDeletedeloresrast@yahoo.com
I love EPP since the first time that I tried it. Small quilts or large quilts, EPP is great for both.
ReplyDeleteI have not tried EPP - your mini and the quilting are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI have tried it a little bit, but do not have a EPP project done.
ReplyDeleteI've not tried EPP as I don't tend to do that sort of hand work :)
ReplyDeleteI love EPP. I take my case of supplies wherever I go. Great portable craft. Working on a Henie quilt
ReplyDeleteEPP is so relaxing! My hubby and I just finished a 6 day road tip to North Dakota and back to Arizona-of course, I packed my ongoing Grandmother's Flower Garden project to work on, both ways in the car!
ReplyDeleteLove EPP and would love a copy of the book - using the embroidery as quilting is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI've got several (unfinished) EPP projects that I started several years ago. Love the idea & technique. Just never seem to sit down to finish them. At the moment, our living room doesn't have good enough light for me to see at night --that's something that has got to change in the future. I do love all things mini!
ReplyDeleteI love your Mini Hexie Quilt. I have never tried EPP. I love making mini quilts, table runners, & small things!
ReplyDeleteSharon.robinson10@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would love to learn EPP! Love the hexes side would love a copy of the book.
ReplyDeleteI have done EPP, and I love it! Actually, I started a smaller version of a Bev McCullough pattern
ReplyDeleteAs a beginning quilter, I've never made a mini quilt or done any EPP. Maybe I will attempt both if I am fortunate enough to win a copy of Bev McCullough’s new book, Make It Mini.
ReplyDeleteCarla at ctopp@richhill.k12.mo.us
I have an EPP project going as we speak. My guild is making a quilt for Habitat for Humanity using hexies. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love EPP and have made many projects.
ReplyDeleteI've tried EPP several times, but the projects are too big for me to finish. A mini quilt might be a better way to try this.
ReplyDeleteI've tried EPP a couple times, but would like to work on a defined small project. Love to add hand embroidery as an embellishment. swalker287 (at) gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLove the mini-ideas! Great way to try out new or different design ideas before making a larger quilt!
ReplyDeleteTime is so short at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThis great book would let me get my sewing mojo back and get something finished 😀
I’ve made a few small projects. It’s not my favorite but it works best in some situations.
ReplyDeleteSmall projects are great to get going the juices!!!! You can see the results soo much faster!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your fabric selection for your barn mini quilt! I made x baby quilts using the EPP method but it’s been 40 years so I’m ready to jump back in.
ReplyDeleteLeorag@hotmail.com
I've been looking for my next EPP and this looks like a winner!
ReplyDeleteI love EPP & this pattern is the 1st I would like to do from the book. I love to embroider & DUH! never thought of adding Hexi "quilting" to make it look like the entire background has been pieced with hexis.
ReplyDeleteI actually once used EPP on a pouch, but last year I made (along with Pat Sloan and other designers) the "Old School" quilt where 12 designers each had a block that we learned something from. One was totally EPP and it's in the center of my quilt! Your mini is adorable and I love your light aqua quilting.
ReplyDeleteI've not tried EPP yet, but perhaps in the future!
ReplyDeletetuttlefamily@cox.net
I'd love to win this book
ReplyDeletequiltdream4me@gmail.com
I have a grandmother's flower garden quilt that has been going on for a very long time, which is my first and so far only EPP. I like it, and I'm fine with its very slow status. I know I'd like to do more, since I like to do needle-turn appliqué.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't able to leave my email address in the comment about my grandmother's flower garden--I'm Beth T. at wordygirl@earthlink.net. Sorry for the confusion!
ReplyDeleteI have made hexies. I like to use them in small projects because there is no way I'll be spending the time to make a bed quilt with them. The mini you made is just the thing for my hexies!
ReplyDeleteI’ve never tried EPP. I like your fall version of the mini quilt
ReplyDeleteI have tried EPP. I have a quilt top sitting somewhere incomplete. I need to get it out again. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI've tried it just a little. I need to dive in a little more!
ReplyDeleteI love EPP! I have only done a tiny bit of it myself.. I'm not super patient lol!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I just started EPP and am working on hexie flowers.
