Clear Sky Quilt ideas + Quilt Along

I think it's so fun to play around with a pattern and try adding in different fabric combinations.

This week I've been trying out some new ideas with my Clear Sky quilt pattern. The Clear Sky quilt along starts on Monday (August 2!) so I thought I'd share some of these mock ups to hopefully inspire you and help you decide which fabrics to use for your own version of Clear Sky!

Okay - ready for some inspiration? First of all, here's the very first version of Clear Sky, made for the Love Patchwork & Quilting magazine back in 2020.

For this quilt I used a bundle of Kona solids:
(Sunflower, Maize, Candy Green, Ice Frappe, Cabbage, Honeydew, Melon, Dusty Peach, Periwinkle, and Cloud - click on the name above to find it at the Fat Quarter Shop*. You can also find these from Fabric Bubb.)

I love how fresh and spring-like this original Clear Sky quilt is!

And here's the version I made for the official pattern cover using a fabric line called Winterland (designed by Amanda Castor for Riley Blake Designs). Winterland will be shipping to stores soon! Ask you local quilt shop if they've ordered it.

Since we're now heading towards Fall, I thought I'd try a version in Fall-inspired solid colors, with an off-white background:

(Confetti Cotton colors used: Oceanside, Scuba, Daisy, Beehive, Clover, Hunter, Pumpkin, Marmalade, Canyon Rose, Wine, and background fabric is Pearl).

And then I had an idea to switch things up and use one main print throughout the whole quilt - that print is used in every star block.

I really like how that one print helps to tie everything together. The main print is this floral from the line, Adel in Autumn (by Sandy Gervais for Riley Blake Designs).

If you want to copy this look, buy enough of the one print to use in place of Fabric B, Fabric D, Fabric F, Fabric H, and Fabric J (which is 1 3/4 yards total). Then I used the following Confetti Cotton Solids for the other prints:

Fabric A: Seafoam
Fabric C: Daisy
Fabric E: Hunter
Fabric G:Brick
Fabric I: Pumpkin

Here's another version of Clear Sky with a great Fall vibe to it:

This one uses a line called Songbook (by Fancy That Design House for Moda Fabrics). And I switched it up by using my favorite Grunge print (also by Moda, color is Picnic) for the background fabric. I love how the prints really pop against the darker background.

Since Christmas is just a handful of months away, I thought I'd mock up a couple of Christmas versions of Clear Sky.

This first one uses a line called Christmas Morning (by Lella Boutique for Moda):

And here's a version using prints from the same fabric line, but this time on a gray background:

Using the gray background allowed me to add more of the white and light gray prints from the Christmas Morning line in the star blocks.

And here's one more Christmassy version - this one uses a fabric line called Christmas Adventure (by Bev McCullough for Riley Blake Designs)

I love how bright and fun this one is!

Here's another bright and fun one - this one is made using Stay Gold by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society

I did the same thing with this quilt that I did with the Fall inspired one above - I used the same main print in every block (in place of Fabrics B, D, F, H, and J), then chose some coordinating prints from the line to use for Fabrics A, C, E, G, and I.

For this next mock up, just out of curiosity I did a version that used just two prints for the whole quilt:

So for fabrics A, C, E, G, and I in the pattern I used a small floral print by Bonnie and Camille. And for fabrics B, D, F, H, and J in the pattern I used a red swiss dot print. And to really make the blocks shine I added a charcoal gray background. Kinda fun, right?

This next one is one of my favorites of the whole group:

This one uses prints from the Strawberry Honey fabric line (by Gracey Larson for Riley Blake Designs). It's such a sweet quilt, and would be so darling in a little girl's room.

And then this final mock up is the one I'm currently stitching up:

It's another all-solids version but these are Kona cottons in pretty jewel tones. The colors of Kona cotton solids used are:

  2. I've started making blocks because I love the setting of your quilt. Would it be OK to change some of the blocks I sew for this quilt along? Thanks

    1. Sure! It's your quilt so you make it how you like it. I had someone comment that they didn't like one of the star blocks so they make more of one of the others to swap in and I loved that they made it how they wanted.

  3. it would be hard to pick a favorite out of all those choices but I am going to go with Winterland as that is what drew me to want to make this quilt in similar colors or patriotic prints. I did find a source for the fabrics today though.
