Sewing with Scraps

This week I pulled out my leftovers from the Honey Honey quilt and sliced them up.  I had mostly strips leftover, some as short as 8.5” inches so that was my starting point.  I cut everything down to 8.5” inches but with varying widths.  I added in about a yard of some Kona White I had in my closet as well.

Once I had everything cut, I randomly sewed them together into rows, pressed and then sewed the rows together.

This quilt top came together so quickly – mostly out of necessity.  I just don’t have a lot of time right now and this made for a quick finish.  When I do get time to sew I sure am quick - you should see me - I'm like a blur!  Imagine the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes, but with bits of fabric and thread swirling around.

The quilt top measures about 44” x 57”

I have some sweet pink floral flannel for the backing and a bit darker pink print for the binding.  But that will just have to wait.  This quilt will eventually be heading to Project Linus.  Eventually.

This week’s finish

Hot Pads using Serenata Fabrics

I had two projects this week - neither of which was a quilt.  Weird.  The first was a set of hot pads for a friend of mine.  I’m loving the new Serenata line by Riley Blake by the way.  To go with the hot pads I have a tutorial over on The Fabric Mill’s blog.  It’s pretty straightforward stuff for most quilters, but for those sewers and crafters who don’t know how to do machine binding I explain it step by step.  While I was at it I made several more hot pads for myself too.  My older ones were looking pretty sorry.

The second was this bag which I'll show more of later.  It's a quick and easy pattern, but I need a bag that is a bit more narrow and a bit taller.  I'm going to tweak the measurements and make another out of these- (yes, more Serenata - see I told you loved it.)

I’m feeling a little low on both creativity AND time this past week.  I wouldn’t call it a rut exactly, but it’s been nice to take a little break and some reading instead.  I still do have this stack of ginghams that is calling my name.  My original idea for using these was a 14” block but the math is killin’ my brain this week.  For some reason this block is just not coming together like they usually do.  Hopefully with a little more sleep and at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted time I can figure it out.

A good combo

abrightcorner on instagram
Doing a little late night straight-line quilting while watching old episodes of The West Wing.  Makes for a good combo.  I miss that show.  I started re-watching the episodes through Amazon prime - I believe they have all 7 seasons.  They'd better anyway.

By the way, I'm now on instagram as abrightcorner.  I've had a personal & family (private) account for awhile and have loved it so I started one for the blog side of things.  Not on instagram?  You can still follow along here.

Now I'm off to buy just a bit more fabric.  I was careless last night (probably too distracted watching tv) and I cut what was supposed to be binding fabric into four nice 9" squares.  Ooops!

Ginghams

Gingham fabric stacks - gorgeous colors!

I’m working with some of the new Riley Blake ginghams today.  Have you seen these?  The ones pictured here are the small gingham.  They also have medium and large available.  I got these in a fat quarter bundle from the Fat Quarter Shop (I had a gift certificate wahooo!) But the small and medium ginghams can also be found at the Fabric Fly shop (love this shop!)

The solids I have in the photo above are Kona Solids.  I had my preschooler with me yesterday at my local quilt shop and I enlisted his help in finding the solids to match each of the ginghams.  He had a blast – and he did a great job!

Honey Honey + Sweet Talk

Now that’s a perfect post title for a Valentine’s Day post!  I hope you all are having a chocolate-filled day!
I just wanted to show you another of my recent quilt finishes:

Sweet Talk quilt pattern using Honey Honey by Moda

This quilt was made with this stack of FQ and my Sweet Talk quilt pattern.  I love that I’ve been able to work with so many pink fabrics lately!

I think that this fabric line was perfectly named.  There are a couple of honeycomb prints with sweet little bees and the other prints are flowers, flowers and more flowers!

My most favorite print is Linen Sunset.  De-lish-ous blooms everywhere.  I used it as the backing but I think it would make a lovely quilt just on it’s own.

This quilt was made to be a sample for the Fabric Mill so they get to enjoy it for awhile but I cannot wait to get it back!

Christmas trees in February

Yes, that is a Christmas tree.  In February.

This afternoon I'm working on a pattern for this advent calendar.  I'm so very glad that I took detailed notes the last time I made one.  It sure makes this pattern writing business a whole lot easier!

Sweet Talk quilt + pattern

Here’s my latest finish!  I finally decided what to do with this fat quarter stack of Noteworthy:

Sweet Talk quilt pattern

The fat quarters were sliced and diced into some (okay a lot of) half square triangles.  I added the large heart in the bottom corner as a homage to a certain upcoming holiday.  The heart in the top left corner was added because I was missing just ONE dang HST.  Not worth buying more fabric for.  So I used scraps and appliqued the pink heart onto a white square.  I think it adds just a wee bit o’ charm.

For the quilting I tried a new-to-me pattern – large loops combined with gentle waves.  I like the softness of it!  You can sort of see it in the photo above, and better in the next two photos:

The binding is the pink stripe from the Noteworthy line.  It does a great job framing the quilt without being overpowering.

I’m calling this quilt “Sweet Talk” and the pattern is available here and here.  The pattern includes instructions for a throw size (50” x 60”) and a twin size (71” x 88”)

Here are the details for this quilt:
finished measurement: 50” x 60”
fabrics used: 11 fat quarters (Noteworthy by Sweetwater for Moda) and Kona Snow
Binding: Kisses Get Skinny (Noteworthy)

Honey Honey

Honey Honey Fat Quarters

Today I’m hanging out with some of the fabric from Kate Spain’s new line for Moda – Honey Honey.  It’s delightfully flowery.  I can almost smell my honeysuckle blossoms!

This stack of fat quarters will soon become a stack of half square triangles.  What are you working on today?

And Just One More

Sprouts Table Runner and Topper pattern
[pattern is available here or here]

So here is the last version of the Sprouts Table Runner!  (Other two are here and here

This is the small size (12” x 30”) and is the perfect size to fit on a small rectangle table or on top of a bookcase or chest.  Yesterday a friend of mine commented that this one would also be a cute wall hanging!

Sprouts Table Runner and Topper pattern

For the applique stitching I did a zigzag around the vases and the leaves and used a tight zigzag for the stems like I did for the red circular version.  And as with the other two, I also added some lines through the leaves and vases – just some straight line stitching to give them some detail.

My favorite vase is the darker pink one on the far right:

These fabrics are all from Riley Blake – Hello Sunshine and Happy Ever After.

Have a great Friday everyone!
