Cheer Up Quilt Christmas Version

Today I'm sharing a Christmas version of my Cheer Up quilt pattern. I started this quilt as a sample for my Garden of Quilts class that I taught this year, and was happy to have a good excuse to get it done in time for Christmas!

For this Christmas version of Cheer Up, I started with a few prints from the Good News Great Joy fabric line (by Fancy That Design House / Moda), and then I wandered around one of my local quilt shops to gather a few more that coordinated. The last few prints were added from my stash. And I'm really happy with the final combination!

It was fun to pull together some fat quarters from different designers and create my own custom bundle. I was worried about the darker greens and blacks making this quilt be too dark and moody, so I added in the pinks and lighter blues to brighten it up a bit.

It was a little more work than just using one single fabric line or just using a pre-assembled FQ bundle, but worth the extra effort I think. Plus it helps to make the quilt more unique!

The Cheer Up pattern uses either fat quarters or yardage, and includes four sizes:

  • Crib (50" x 56")
  • Throw (68" x 77")
  • Twin (68" x 87")
  • Queen (86" x 98")

The Cheer Up quilt block uses a partial seam technique but it's not difficult - I promise!

Partial seams are often confused with the more challenging Y-seam technique. Partial seams are pretty easy and the Cheer Up pattern includes plenty of step by step diagrams to help you through it.

For the backing on this quilt I found a coordinating solid at my local quilt shop. The binding is from the Good News Great Joy fabric line by Fancy That Design House (Moda).

For the quilting I used a new-to-me longarm design called Parquet Pop by Vicki Ruebel. I love the texture it creates, without distracting too much from the fabrics or the block design.

The Cheer Up pattern is available as a PDF (instant download) or paper copy here in my shop

Quilt shops can order Cheer Up through distributors (Checker, EE Schenck, and Brewer)
