Winter Magic Quilt in Christmas Morning Fabrics

Today I'm sharing a version of the Winter Magic quilt pattern - a fat quarter friendly Christmas quilt pattern that I released last year.

I have to admit something... this is not exactly a new quilt. I finished it last year in November, and then we used it and loved it.

But I did finally manage take some photos of it, and with the Winter Magic pattern being the $5 pattern of the month I thought you'd like to see the pattern sewn up in different fabrics than what is shown on the pattern cover.

The Winter Magic pattern is a medallion-style quilt, but it is not as difficult to piece. I really love the look of medallion quilts but sometimes getting everything to line up just right can be tricky.

So I kept the look of a medallion quilt, but created a better way to put it together!

To make the Winter Magic quilt you sew four identical quadrants and then join those together to make the quilt top. It's almost like just making four large quilt blocks.

And along the way there are plenty of diagrams and detailed step-by-step instructions to help you.

You can find both paper copies and downloadable PDF versions of Winter Magic here in my shop

Here's one tip for you - I found it to be helpful that as you cut the background pieces, take a minute to stack pieces of the same size together and then label them with the size (I just use a scrap piece of paper that I pin to each stack - keep it simple!)

That makes it so fast and easy to find the size you need later as you're sewing!

The finished quilt measures 78" x 78" which is a generous throw size, perfect for snuggling.

Or hang it on your wall as a part of your holiday decor. It would be stunning in an entry way!

The Winter Magic pattern includes two different border options - this holly border that you see in this quilt, and a candy cane stripe border.

I wanted to give a border option for those that don't love the color green or who didn't want to use any green in their quilt. Options in quilt patterns are great things!

One thing I love about this pattern is that it is fat quarter friendly. You can also use yardage (which is listed on the pattern cover) but sometimes it's so quick to just grab the FQ at the quilt shop and head to the register without having to wait in the cutting line.

Being fat quarter friendly also makes it easy for quilt shops to kit.

A total of 11 fat quarters are needed, plus 1/2 yard for the outer border.

The back of the pattern cover shows you exactly how many fat quarters are needed for each section of the quilt so you can easily customize your quilt with the colors and prints you want to use.

The fabrics used in this quilt are from the Christmas Morning line designed by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. It was released last year and now the prints are pretty hard to find, but there are a few still on etsy!

But if you love this look I have some good news for you! Vanessa (Lella Boutique) has a new line coming next May that is closely related and you can use her new line (called Christmas Eve) to make this same quilt.

And if you're a quilt shop, you can order her fabric now to kit this pattern! I'll list the fabric requirements and suggested prints at the bottom of this post.

The quilting was done by Knot and Thread and I love that it looks like icy snowflakes!

For the background fabric I used Moda Bella 98 which is a nice, crisp solid white. The binding fabric is the red polka dot print from the Christmas Morning fabric line.
