Lucky Duck Quilt in Hopscotch and Freckles Fabrics

Today I get to share a Lucky Duck quilt that I finished up this week.

The gray days of winter really get to me so it's always a delight to work with brighter, cheerful colors and fabrics this time of year. And another plus is to be able to whip up a quilt pretty quickly and get the satisfaction that comes from FINISHING something. You know what I mean!

For this Lucky Duck quilt I used fat quarters from a new fabric line from Poppie Cotton called Hopscotch and Freckles

I selected just the reds and blues from the line. The text print, and the small florals are my favorite, but the little strawberries are a close third!

The Lucky Duck pattern comes in five different sizes, and this is the lap size (55" x 65").

To make a Lucky Duck quilt you can use either pre-cut 10" squares (Layer Cakes) or fat quarters. For this version I used ten fat quarters - which I feel is a great number of prints! It gives a nice variety of fabrics but it's not such a big FQ bundle that it will break the bank.

I designed the Lucky Duck pattern with a little short cut built into it. It really helps to make the quilt come together quickly! Adding sashing is one of my least favorite parts of quilt making so I built the sashing right into the Lucky Duck blocks.

I love how the blocks dance on the quilt top!

If you'd like to see other versions & sizes of Lucky Duck, including one with a dark background you can see them here.  It's really interesting to see how the quilt changes depending on the fabrics used!

I recently bought a new roll of batting (Pellon 80/20) and this new one has a bit more loft than what I usually use.

To allow the batting keep some of it's loft, I used a more open quilting design. This longarm panto is called Soho and I intentionally kept it larger to allow more space between the quilting lines. I'm curious to see how much the quilt shrinks and crinkles with this new-to-me batting!

If you'd like to give Pellon 80/20 a try you can find packages here from the Fat Quarter Shop.
