Hexing Around

I first posted about this quilt a few weeks ago.  This Hexing Around quilt was created by the members of the IMAGINE at do. Good Stitches group.  She’s all finished and ready to be mailed.

I decided against using any sashing between the blocks and I LOVE the result.  I preferred the more compact look with less open space between the vibrant colors. (The tutorial for making the blocks can be found here.  Great tutorial – thanks Lee!)

For the quilting I tried something new.  I did some simple wavy lines horizontally across the quilt.  You can sort of see them in the photo above, but better in the photo below.  I wanted the lines to be organic feeling – not structured and exact.

As I began the quilting I was a bit concerned that I might run into some puckering problems but I had none.  (whew!)  I was also very curious how it would look after washing- but no worries!  It’s beautiful, and I will definitely be using the wavy lines quilting technique again sometime!

The quilt back is fairly simple:

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but with the blue fabric and the wavy quilting lines it gives a feeling of water – a happy accident.  Love when that happens.  The blue fabric is from the Fox Trails line by Riley Blake.  It’s called Basic Shades- Robin.  You can see it here with the rest of the line and I purchased it from here (love this shop!)

I wanted a dark binding to help frame the quilt front and I ended up deciding on this dot print from the Jovial line (Basic Grey for Moda).  I added a strip of it across the back as well.

Thank you to all of the members of the IMAGINE group for the blocks you donated!

Fabric Stack Friday

Sick of seeing yellows yet?  Not me.  It’s gray and rainy here today so a stack of happy yellow fabrics is just what I needed.

full stack of yellow fabric

I wanted to add three more fabrics to my stack for this project.  I had to visit three different shops to gather this many yellows – no one shop had enough!  But this is the final stack.  The cutting may begin!

So far this is shaping up to be a nice, productive weekend.  I’ve made 1/2 years worth of strawberry jelly, I’ll be quilting two twin size quilts for two sweet nieces, and hopefully getting a good start on this yellow/gray quilt.

Apple of My Eye

Remember this fabric stack from last Friday?

apple of my eye fabric stack 2

This afternoon it was cut to bits and sewn back together with some Kona White.

I decided to go ahead with my table topper idea.  It’s finished at about 34” x 34.”  I’ll share it with you in a couple of days.  I was originally going to write it up as a pattern but now I think I’ll just do a tutorial.

I sure love this Apple of My Eye line.  And lookie here – I found the free download for this quilt

Hexing Around

April was my month to plan the quilt for our IMAGINE at do.  Good Stitches group.  After several weeks of deliberation, I decided on this tutorial by Lee over at Freshly Pieced.  Each member of our IMAGINE group chose one color and made two blocks, and then mailed them to me.  It was so fun to get the mail each day as these lovely blocks kept coming in!

All of the blocks are here now and my next job is to decide how to place them all.  Once I got them on my wall, I had to decide which colors of blocks I would contribute. I thought it needed one more green block, and I also made an orangey-yellow block.

Here are all of the gorgeous blocks up on the design wall:

Next up:  Adding some thin (maybe 2”?) sashing between each block and getting the quilt top finished!

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Fabric Stack Friday

A few more yellows for this project-

And for this stack of prints from the Apple of My Eye line, I was imagining a table topper with a few raw-edge appliqued apples.  Then I saw this, and my plans might have changed.

That Time of Year (Wednesday's Color Card)

Each May I get the urge to pick every lilac I see, and find a parade to watch.

Lilacs in May 2

I grew up in Spokane, Washington and each May the city holds a Lilac Festival.  There are lilacs blooming everywhere.  The festival royalty is chosen.  Around town you can hear the Jr High and High School marching bands rehearsing for the parades.  All along the parade route, the downtown intersections are each painted with enormous images of lilacs.  Then there is the parade.  It’s an evening parade – The Torchlight Parade.  Very cool.  I think all parades should be at night.  Does someone (ahem…mom) want to buy me a plane ticket to Spokane so I can see the parade this year??

Testing Butterflies

test butterfly

This past weekend I was testing out some raw-edged applique butterflies.  She’s sweet, isn’t she?  A customer asked for a crib bumper to match this quilt and wanted a few butterflies added in.
