Undecided

orange aqua green full 1

This quilt is….. interesting.  I had a stack of scraps in my closet that I just didn’t love.  I pulled them out the other day and cut them up into blocks of 3.5”, 6.5” and 12.5”.  This quilt top is the mash up of all of those blocks.  It might not look like it, but there is a (sort of) order to this mess.

As I was building the rows I just kept liking this whole thing less and less.  Then once the top was completed I laid it out on the floor and decided it wasn’t all that bad.  I’m hoping some quilting will help it that much more.

ps.  It’s tough to photograph a quilt top on a windy day.

Yellow and Gray

playing with yellow and gray

This is a peek at my first tester block for a new pattern.  The tester block came out perfectly (whew!)

I really am not a big fan of the color yellow, but this print got me.

A Bit Different

One of my latest custom orders has been for crib bumpers and a pillow to match this quilt:

 mary mary 7

I was able to track down the same blue checked binding (love it!) and a charm pack from the same line (Basket of Flowers by Mary Engelbreit).  They were not easy to find!

At first I wasn't sure I wanted to tackle crib bumpers, but then I realized that the style she wanted would mean that each bumper segment was actually just a small quilt.  I know how to do THAT!  She asked that the bumpers be solid white with the blue checked fabric as binding.  The checked binding is used on the quilted pillow as well.  I’ll show you when they’re all done!

Little Miss Smart

Several weeks ago I posted a photo of this quilt up on the design wall.  She’s all finished now!

This was a custom order quilt designed to be similar to the quilt made by Amy Smart for her daughter.  As I mentioned in a previous blog post, Amy just happened to have enough 4.5” squares leftover to create this quilt and I am SO very glad!

I loved working with all of these squares.  Because they had been collected over time, they gave the quilt that heirloom feel.

Just as in the original quilt, the corners of the wide border are mitered – I love the look of that especially with the striped fabric.

I forgot to do a final measurement before shipping, but when I made the first sketch-up of the quilt it measured at about 75” x 93”  -- a nice twin size

This lovely quilt is on it’s way to it’s new home!

I Spy

Several weeks ago I was in one of my local quilt shops (not one that I visit regularly) and I happened to see this

zoo dwellers version

It looked so familiar and then it dawned on me – it was made using my Zoo Dwellers tutorial!  I was first delighted and then a bit embarrassed to think that it took me so long to recognize one of my own designs.  The shop (American Quilting) was selling kits and they might still have one or two.  If you are interested give them a call.  I believe they are able to take payment by phone and ship your order to you.

Here is the original Zoo Dwellers quilt:

Branching Out

IMG_8158

It’s always good to challenge yourself, right?  Last week I was trying out a new quilting pattern:  clouds!  I think I really like them.  Well, at first I didn’t like them.  But once I got the hang of it and they actually started LOOKING like clouds, then I liked them.

Sarah Jane Family Tree

Back in March I posted this pic of a small stack of sweet fabrics and said I would show you when the quilt was finished.

sarah jane custom order

She’s all finished and has made her way to her new owner!

The quilt is a duplicate of one that Amy Smart made last year so I cannot take any credit for the design of the quilt!  (Yes, Amy knows that I made a clone.)

The customer purchased the family tree panel and added her family names.  She then sent it to me and I created the quilt.  I loved working with this fabric – and the quilt itself was an unusual one for me.  Normally my quilts are made of pieced blocks and rarely do I add any borders.  This one was all borders!  A nice change of pace.  And don’t tell anyone, but I think I’m possibly becoming a fan of adding borders.

The fabrics are all from the Children at Play line by Sarah Jane.  The prints used in the borders are:  Meadow in Soft Pink and Wallpaper Flowers in Berry.  The Wallpaper Flowers in Berry was used for the binding as well, and the backing is Summer Gardens in Lilac.

Leftovers

Still here.  Still busy.  Still sick.  Can it please be Summer?

I’m working away on these custom orders.  Meanwhile, I’ll give you a preview of a small quilt that I hope to write about soon.  It’s not a top secret thing, I just don’t have time right now.

This was made from the scraps leftover from the Stars Abound 2 quilt.  They are such fun, bright colors and they look so great together.  I couldn’t bear to have them assimilated into the black hole that I call my scrap bins.  I think I used every.last.scrap in this quilt.  It sure feels good to do that.

Happy April everyone!
